It costs less to do business in Fredericton in part because of the region’s efficient and low cost utilities. Fredericton provides water supply and services to both commercial and residential users through technologically advanced equipment and processes. Further, city staff are highly trained and certified in water supply and wastewater management to ensure safe and reliable water supplies. Fredericton operates on a quarterly billing system that includes low base and consumption rates.
ELECTRICITY
The NB Power Group, through it’s operating companies, provides reliable, safe and competitively-priced electricity generated at 15 facilities, delivered via power lines, substations, and terminals to more than 360,000 direct and indirect customers within New Brunswick and surrounding markets.
NB Power operating companies:
NB Power Generation operates and maintains one of North America’s most diverse generating systems consisting of 14 hydro, coal, oil, diesel and Orimulsion® powered stations. It has an installed capacity of 3,313 MW.
NB Power Nuclear operates and maintains the Point Lepreau Generating Station, a CANDU – 6 reactor, providing another 635 MW of electricity.
NB Power Transmission operates and maintains 46 terminals and switchyards that are interconnected by over 6,700 km of lines. The system is also interconnected with electrical systems in northeastern North America including Quebec, Maine, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
NB Power Distribution and Customer Service is responsible for securing adequate capacity and energy supplies to meet customer demand. It is responsible for operating and maintaining the distribution system that serves residential, commercial, industrial and wholesale customers across New Brunswick.
NATURAL GAS
New Brunswick has a natural gas transmission pipeline running from the Northeast of New Brunswick to New England. Enbridge Gas New Brunswick has laid a further distribution pipeline in the Fredericton region so that over 24,000 residences and businesses have long-term access to a clean-burning and competitively priced energy supply.
TELECOMMUNICATIONS
New Brunswick has a leading digital, dual fiber optic system that services the entire province. Everyone is connected— New Brunswick has universal broadband access in all public schools and over 210 access centres throughout the province.
Telecommunications costs in Canada are one-third lower than those in Europe or the United States. Further, New Brunswick does not impose calling tax on international calls, providing an additional savings over other jurisdictions.
